Lisa and I are so behind on our Onely research and writing that we missed Singles Shopping Day on 11 November! So sorry we were unable to flag it for for you, our Copious Readers, because I know you all (and by you all, I mean me) love any holiday that combines shopping with the chance to get all up on our soapboxes about the awesomeness of singlehood.
On 11/11, Singles Shopping Day, according to this AP news article,
Singles Day was begun by Chinese college students in the 1990s as a version of Valentine’s Day for people without romantic partners. . . Unattached young people would treat each other to dinner or give gifts to woo that special someone and end their single status.
Ok, so that last part–ending their single status–doesn’t really fit into the whole rah-rah-yay singlehood optic that Onely favors. But we’re willing to overlook a little amatanormativity in exchange for the relatively radical idea of buying bunches of lovely gifts for (gasp!) platonic friends. . . at cutrate prices in the biggest e-commerce event of the year! RAH!
By now some of you are saying, “Christina, weren’t you a (foreign) student in China in the 1990s?” Why yes, but alas, Copious Readers, I cannot lay claim to this Singles Day idea. Yet be assured that when midnight of 11/11 (four singles!) comes around again, I will be poised at my keyboard ready to click into cybermaterialism mode–buying for my friends, but shopping on behalf of single people everywhere.

A good idea although I am not sure that having it on 11 November (Veterans’ Day / Armistice Day) is the best idea in much of the world. 1 November is 1/11 (or 11/1) after all and at the same time of the year. (although Just After Halloween – good or bad idea?)
Well it’s a Chinese thing so I don’t think they needed to consider the U.S.’ veterans’ day. . .
I think that every day should be singles shopping day – even if only because we are masters of our own shopping and don’t have anybody to “report” to. 😉
Darn right. 🙂
