One of the thrills of having a WordPress-sponsored blog is that we can see how our readers come to find our blog. In other words, we can see what google searches end up “hitting” our site. One of the most frequent and popular searches so far? “Confused about men” [or some variation thereof]. Of course this is because that’s the title of one of our earlier posts, “Confused about Men? Get you a Manslation!” when we plugged another blog with a completely different focus (likely the one you’re looking for, we admit).

We find this eternally amusing, but just to throw everyone off we figured we’d write another post with a similar title so you’d end up here… We think you must have ended up here thanks to some higher powers, and with this in mind here’s what we advise:

Stop worrying about men! Read our amazing blog!!!

We hope you enjoy Onely! 🙂

p.s. we have the same message for all you people searching for “nut sucking” (you know who you are!),  which tracks to this hilarious post by Christina. Don’t be shy… we want you to read our site too!!!

Cable TV, Scourge of the Onelys (installment 374x): What Not to Wear July 23, 2008

Since I often work at home, one of my guilty pleasures is to watch reruns of TLC’s show, What Not to Wear (the American version) when I take a break for lunch. Today, inspired by Bella DePaulo’s chapter on the myth that Every Single Person Is “Interested in Just One Thing – Getting Coupled,” I decided to take notes as I watched today’s episode, which focused on a 26-year-old single young woman named Sohni. I was curious about whether the show’s rhetoric would carry a pro-coupling spin or if maybe it would just encourage Sohni to look fabulous, no matter her motivation. After all, Sohni has a career, hopes to go to law school, and likes to party with her friends in Chicago… Isn’t that enough? (more…)

Friendship, Being Onely, and Being Female July 22, 2008

In an earlier post, Christina wrote about how she had been “thinking about how so often we measure the passage of time in units of relationships, marriages, and children” and went on to point out some of the many other markers we could use to “measure” and “value” what we’ve done in our individual lives. This post keeps making its way back into my mind because one of the most important markers, for me, has been and continues to be the handful of close female friends I have made and kept even while moving from place to place over the last 10 years or so. Whether you love or hate Hillary Clinton, this kind of effort by the Bush administration affects everyone. Please read Clinton’s blog posting about a set of regulations set to put in place the labels all kinds of contraceptives – including birth control, IUDs, and emergency contraception – as “abortion.” There is a petition you can sign, too (at the end of the rhreality post):

You know that pristine wedge of Gouda cheese in your fridge? Pull it out, bite off a piece. From the pointy end. Take another bite. From the rounded side. (Remove the wax first–just a strip slightly wider than your mouth.) Keep gnawing at the cheese until you get your calcium fix. Return to fridge shelf. Bonus points if teethmarks scour at least half of the cheese’s non-waxed surface area. Extra bonus points if the teethmarks are in shape of a grin.

All week I have been simultaneously looking forward to, preparing for, and putting off a major cleaning and thorough organization of my living quarters. This tension between starting and stopping, beginning and pausing, always occurs. If I were responsible to/for anyone else, I am sure this habit would become a major annoyance, maybe even a deal-breaker. But I’m not. I am Onely. Here’s how the process unfolded this time [a bit elongated because my summertime-school schedule allows me to extend the process]: (more…)

For the past week, I have been fighting an irritating cold (irritating because I *hate* feeling sick. OK I suppose this is not necessarily unique to me, but STILL). One of the symptoms of this cold has been a hacking cough, which only subsides in response to drugs (another thing I *hate*). Over the weekend (and not incidentally, under the influence of these drugs), I was updating some details of the Onely site and I started thinking – or perhaps obsessing is a better word – about the site’s subtitle, which reads: “A noun. An adjective. A better Scrabble word than Heteronormative.” (more…)

A quick Google search tells us that social psychologist Bella DePaulo coined the term “singlism”, meaning discrimination against singles. Did you know that singlism is not only an emotional component of our society, but is actually institutionalized? (more…)

Although some people’s first instinct is to think that people who don’t want kids are selfish, many people actually *have* kids for selfish reasons:

–to improve their relationship with their spouse or partner

–to leave behind a legacy, copies of their genes

–to have someone to take care of them in their old age

–to relive missed opportunities from their own youth

–to fit in, because everyone else is doing it (more…)

So I am preparing for one of my favorite things, a road trip that begins tomorrow (which means that I won’t be posting much, at least through the weekend). I’m heading from Louisville to St. Louis to celebrate my best friend’s birthday (HAPPY BIRTHDAY MAL!) and then on to Kansas City to visit my grandparents (somehow I managed to promise them a visit in July — and I learned of this “promise” through a family letter which they send every month… I’m not complaining, of course… Just saying!).

Anyway. My point being: Road trips are one of my very favorite things about being Onely. (more…)
