In a spectacular display of nominative determinism, reader Dick made the following comments on social psychologist Bella DePaulo’s Living Single blog:

You seem to spend an inordinate amount of time worrying about the ‘stigma’ of being single. Could it be that you are repressing your desire to connect with someone? I can hardly believe that single people are so repressed. Just another ‘ism’ to distract people from real problems.

What interested me most about this post was “Could it be that you are repressing your desire to connect with someone?”

Today my Ipod turned up this song by Trick Pony, in which Jesse James, Orville Wright, and Picasso each say they excelled in their field because “it’s just what I do when I can’t get no lovin'”.  As if painting masterpieces or inventing the airplane is all well and good, but what those guys really wanted–and, by implication, should have been pursuing–is lovin’ (read: heteronormative relationship). I just came across this article in my morning internet-browse, entitled “10 Tips for Defusing Jealousy once You’re Engaged” (because engaged people have it soooo hard! sorry… ahem, I of course would have no idea how “difficult” it must be to be engaged, because I’ve never been). Read on and pay attention to the embedded assumption that it’s generally single people who are going to be jealous, and it’s all because they are single and wish they weren’t: (more…)

Last week when I went to the doctor to make sure I didn’t have strep and after the doc agreed that my throat looked “like it hurt” (duh!), she tried to convince me to get updated on my shots. I was (irrationally, I’ll admit) reluctant, especially because I figured I was in enough pain as it is, but she tried to convince me anyway. Here’s how the conversation transpired: (more…)

People usually intend to be helpful and friendly when they ask:

“You’re so (complimentary adjective); so why are you still single?”

As if singlehood were a gross, drippy nose that could and should be cured by a swallow of Sudafed. (more…)

Cable TV, Scourge of the Onelys (installment 374x): What Not to Wear July 23, 2008

Since I often work at home, one of my guilty pleasures is to watch reruns of TLC’s show, What Not to Wear (the American version) when I take a break for lunch. Today, inspired by Bella DePaulo’s chapter on the myth that Every Single Person Is “Interested in Just One Thing – Getting Coupled,” I decided to take notes as I watched today’s episode, which focused on a 26-year-old single young woman named Sohni. I was curious about whether the show’s rhetoric would carry a pro-coupling spin or if maybe it would just encourage Sohni to look fabulous, no matter her motivation. After all, Sohni has a career, hopes to go to law school, and likes to party with her friends in Chicago… Isn’t that enough? (more…)

Whether you love or hate Hillary Clinton, this kind of effort by the Bush administration affects everyone. Please read Clinton’s blog posting about a set of regulations set to put in place the labels all kinds of contraceptives – including birth control, IUDs, and emergency contraception – as “abortion.” There is a petition you can sign, too (at the end of the rhreality post):

I turned on the radio and heard “couples all across America are in love with Defending the Caveman“.

That’s a comedic play about “the ways men and women relate”. (Both quotes from Defending the Caveman’s website). The radio station (Big 100.3) was promoting some ticket giveaway; the ad went on to say, “My husband and I loved it. . .” and “Great date show. . .” No input from any single audience members, or audience members who went with their friends. That struck me as interesting.

One of my favorite routines in the morning is to check out the dating advice provided by MSN (and its affiliates such as Match.com, Chemistry, Redbook, and Cosmopolitan) and to laugh and laugh… Since it’s Friday and I’m back from my long week out of town, I figured I’d pass along the humor. I’m 29 and Onely… Why am I not panicking? This article tells me I *should* be:  (more…)
