Lisa and I write about some prosaic everyday happenings that make us appreciate the being single–such as our post Onely and Nut-Sucking. (Ok, so it’s my post. Lisa would not be caught dead sucking the salt off cashews and putting them back in the tin, even by herself.)

But what if we were Onely with Kids? We would probably not want our kids to misinterpret our nut-sucking and come away thinking that at a party, they can lick the salt off the pretzels and put them back in the Chex mix. (more…)

Yup. That’s right. Couples get a DAY. We get a WEEK!!! (Not that this is a competition or anything — I’m just sayin’!)

Maybe we should be giving each other gifts — I believe I promised Christina a jacuzzi some time ago… 🙂

So — how should we celebrate, as a collective 90+-million-or-so bunch? Readers, submit your ideas!!!

Lisa and I have been so busy blogging about being single, we almost forgot it’s National Singles Week! (Aka National Unmarried and Single Americans Week aka USA Week.) Lisa may write more on this topic later, but for now I’m going to cheat and just link to some great USA Week articles for the convenience of y’all, Copious Readership!  (more…)

Lindabeth over at Don’t Ya Wish Your Girlfriend Was Smart Like Me (I so love the title of this blog!) posted a comment here, which prompted me to check out her blog. I came across these two articles (“Thoughts on the Tyranny of Marriage” and “What’s Wrong with this Article“), both of which align with our stance over here at Onely. So I’ve got to plug this fantastic blog (as Professor What If did) — and say that I look forward to future dialogue between our blogs!

I’ve been virtually (haha) absent from Onely this week thanks to the remnants of Hurricane Ike that blew through the city of Louisville on Sunday and knocked out half the city’s power. Although I got my power back early Wednesday morning, having to work in candlelight required lots of patience and extra time, which therefore pushed me and my work behind, and thus put Onely low on the priority list (quite unfortunately).

But as I told Christina on Sunday evening as I sat on my loveseat surrounded by a small stockpile of burning candles, I much prefer to be Onely to being coupled in a situation like this. Here’s why: (more…)

Often it’s nice to come home to a smiling face, right? Sure. But our mission here at Onely is to seek, find, and relish those moments when significant others do not apply.

When I was living with my then-boyfriend, when I came home from work he greeted me and wanted me to sit down on the couch and take a couple minutes to chat about our days. Sweet, right?

Yes, but I hated it. (more…)

So Onely’s been up since mid- to late-June and we just received our first-ever blog award from one of our readers, Professor What If…? We here at Onely are so grateful for the recognition, especially from a writer as interesting, engaging, and questioning as Professor What If (who really is, I might add, a real-life professor and therefore all the more awesome!). Every post of hers begins with “What If…” and she’s constantly asking anti-normative questions that are both important and often times hard to articulate because they deal with issues that are very easy to take for granted (ie, normative!).

The most exciting thing about receiving this award is that we’re in good company — PWI was generous in her awards (which is the best kind of award-giving) and heading over to her site will give you 12 more sites that might are going to thrill you with their splendiforousness (and which will likely end up on OUR blogroll)! Very exciting, indeed — thanks Professor! 🙂

This week I drove five hours down to North Carolina, where my friend’s family had a beach house. I stopped in Williamsburg, Virginia on the way there and back, to see another friend. On the trip I realized the wonders of an empty passenger seat. (more…)
