Onely becomes Invaluable! January 28, 2009

Onely thanks the Alternatives to Marriage Project for including us on their list of “blogs that are frequently updated and invaluable“. Lisa and I appreciate the affirmation in a time when we struggle to post regularly, fighting the constant assault of jobs and school (and, uh, Facebook).
So check out AtMP’s blog, where you can read about singlism issues and advocacy. See how they took the innovative and caffeinated step of sending chocolates to some judges who declared that an unmarried sex offender is not necessarily scarier than a married one! (Goes to show that Bush’s problem was not enough people sent him positive-reinforcement treats. “Good boy.”)

My pink fuzzy pajamas, covered with little nobbins of black fuzz left over from their monkey business in the drier with my new black sweatshirt.
My single coworker said that she loves coming home and putting on her pajamas right away. “I couldn’t do that if I had to come home to someone,” she said, citing her married friend who was envious of my coworker’s ability to come straight home and strip.
I told her I do the same thing–in the door, off with the slacks! Aaahhhhhhhhhh. I also told her she needed to check out pajamagrams. And that she should not throw them in the drier with a new black sweatshirt.

This evening my hairdresser and I talked about being Onely. Shanaz likes men but is more interested in friends, her hair artistry, her daughter, her writing (Persian language commentary on Iranian politics), and just life. “I’m happiest without a boyfriend,” she says. At forty-something, she’s been married and coupled and single and even accidentally involved with a married man. And she chooses single.
But you know what’s coming next, don’t you? (more…)

. . . is that when someone says something singlist to me, or I experience discrimination because I’m single, instead of getting angry, I get excited because now I have something to post about. (more…)

The other day I walked from my townhouse to my car and saw people of all ages swarming over the grassy knoll in front of our street, giggling and shouting and walking and standing. I recognized a neighbor from the other end of our row of houses, who I only knew from waving distance. She approached me, a petite woman holding the hand of a little toddling girl. (more…)

OK, before (some of) you gag — this post is not actually about the wonders of shoe shopping. No — instead, it’s about how going shoe shopping recently reminded me to remember and relish my Oneliness (how’s that for some alliteration?!). (more…)
Single Women Don’t Do Windows! October 27, 2008

I called around to some window companies, hoping to get an estimate on replacing the nine windows in my townhouse. During the initial phone conversations when I set up appointments, Prince William Home Improvement asked me, “When will you and your husband be available for an estimate?” Long Fence and Home asked me, “Do you have a husband?” And Homework Remodeling asked me, “Will your husband be there too?” (more…)

Dearest co-blogger Christina,
I just want to take a moment to THANK YOU for writing so many fantastic and funny posts for our awesome Onely blog. The ones you wrote this week were sharp and hilarious, as always. We’d been discussing the one about chemistry.com since you checked our inbox and read that bizarro email and immediately called me to sound the alarm. Your post made me laugh so hard (J is not for Jerk!!! HA) — you have such a skill with wit and acuity – I’ve told you before, and I’ll tell you again, I’m completely jealous (but in a good way)!
And I’m glad you decided to call out all those NUT-SUCKERS who keep googling nut-sucking and find your nut-sucking post instead of whatever it is they imagine they’ll find.
We’ve been writing together for about four months now, and I want you to know — I’m having so much fun! I am completely thrilled that you were up for making this crazy idea work. Most of all, of course, I am grateful for this partnership, which I feel has made our friendship even more interesting and satisfying than it already was.
🙂 Awwwwwww,
from your fave co-blogger,
L
Readers: Post love letters to your favorite single friends here!! (and no, I’m not implying that you should write to us, though you may, of course! ;))
