OK, so we know that our readers love us for our witty and (sometimes) snarky prose that aims to raise consciousness about our (unnaturally?) HAPPY lives as singles. And we know ya’ll love us for exposing and resisting the difficult position singles are often put in by heteronormative cultural and traditional assumptions and practices.

BUT — for a change of pace, Christina and I are happy to report on two positive representations of singles in the media that we noticed recently:

My pink fuzzy pajamas, covered with little nobbins of black fuzz left over from their monkey business in the drier with my new black sweatshirt.

My single coworker said that she loves coming home and putting on her pajamas right away. “I couldn’t do that if I had to come home to someone,” she said, citing her married friend who was envious of my coworker’s ability to come straight home and strip.

I told her I do the same thing–in the door, off with the slacks!  Aaahhhhhhhhhh. I also told her she needed to check out pajamagrams. And that she should not throw them in the drier with a new black sweatshirt.

I wanted a Brad Pitt link to put in my Christmas post, so I googled around looking at lists of his film credits, best actor awards, sexyist awards, humanitarian efforts, and fifty-bedroom chateaus.

Just when I was beginning to feel a little bit like an underachiever, I found this bio. Check out the right sidebar, “Heart Monitor”.  My man Brad has not been Onely since 1987! WtF? (more…)

Happy Jesus Day, everyone!

Lisa wanted to send this as a text message to all her friends, but she was afraid she might offend someone. So we’re saying it here, on Onely, where we think most of our Copious Readers will find the phrase just fine. Do you? Is the phrase offensive, or just another way of shaping new holiday habits and traditions?

Speaking of which, I–a nominal Christian–defied tradition and spent Christmas mostly alone. (more…)

Sarah Grimké

Last week we announced a new series: Great Onelies in History, featuring Frances Willard. Luckily for our copious readership, I’m finishing up a semester’s graduate course in the history of rhetoric, and so I’ve got two more important rhetorical figures for us to celebrate! This week, we’re happy to introduce:

Sarah and Angelina Grimké, Great Onelies in History!
1792-1873
Famous for: Advocating for women’s rights, suffrage, and the abolition of slavery. Angelina Grimké  happened to be married, but much of her activism work occurred while she was single — we think she deserves Honorary Oneler status!

It’s ok to like something even if it’s unOnely! Some of my best friends are unOnely. And some of my favorite music is country.  I have three country music stations programmed into my car radio. Although independent-minded female singers with progressive attitudes are edging aside the good ol’ boys, the genre is still steeped in old-school heteronormative rhetoric. And I find myself rocking out to even the worst of it. Ignoring for a moment the philosophical issue of whether one can actually “rock out” to country music, here are some catchy tunes with lyrics you don’t want to listen to too closely: (more…)

  1. Our families (immediate and extended)
  2. Our friends — who we may as well call family
  3. Our readers — you! — for keeping us interesting and interested, and for proving to us that there *are* others out there happy to be single! 🙂
  4. Our cats and dog (Hi Kitty!)
  5. Our homes, which we come back to after long days and extended trips, empty to our relief.
  6. Pumpkin pies. All to ourselves. Good any time of the year!
  7. All the friends who offer their families as substitutes for our own when we’re far away, working through the holiday to get a Ph.D. (OK, that’s Lisa’s special one)
  8. Nut-sucking!!!! hahahahahahaha (that’s Christina’s special one, and Lisa wrote it)

Readers — what else are you thankful for?

Singles solicit the President-elect November 19, 2008

Now that Obama is President-elect (oh the relief!), he has a new site to receive our input. I think you can still go to the site we posted before, but this one seems more current. Tell him that single women voters put him in the White House and remind him to help unmarginalize us. = )

Hey, all Obama has to do is go up in front of the White House correspondents and say, “You know, the other day I was thinking how many cool, independent, well-rounded, happy single people I know.” Suddenly everyone (well, fifty percent of Americans, anyway) will want to be Onely! Doncha think?

I don’t have stats on single men voters, sorry, male Copious Readers! -CC

Copious Readership,

Do you think your single life is just fine? Or even–gasp–GOOD? Yes? Well, then you might want to help the Alternatives to Marriage Project by being a spokesperson.

Here’s an excerpt from the site, with details! –CC

AtMP maintains a database of unmarried people who are willing to talk about their lives with journalists who are working on articles or news pieces about marriage, cohabitation, and related topics. We think these real life stories are an important part of educating the public about unmarried relationships. (more…)

SoloTravel

I was out to lunch with my coworkers the other day and we were talking about our travel dreams. I said I was going to go to Thailand alone, to see a particular monastery. I said I wanted to do a solo trip. My coworkers–about five of them, a variety of ages and sexes (well, two sexes), mostly married but not all–in almost one unified breath said, “WHY would you want to do THAT?” (more…)
