The Planet’s Oneliest Bug! October 13, 2008

This BBC News article informed me that the “planet’s loneliest bug” has been found almost two miles underground in South Africa, “living in complete isolation, total darkness, and 60C (140F) heat” and also without oxygen.
Technically he’s not a bug, but rather the bacterium Desulforudis audaxviator. “Audax viator” means “bold traveller” in Latin. Indeed, Desulforudis has gone where no bacterium has gone before, to become “the first known ecosystem within a single biological species”.
So I nominate the little “rod-shaped” guy as the Planet’s Oneliest Bug. (more…)

Dearest co-blogger Christina,
I just want to take a moment to THANK YOU for writing so many fantastic and funny posts for our awesome Onely blog. The ones you wrote this week were sharp and hilarious, as always. We’d been discussing the one about chemistry.com since you checked our inbox and read that bizarro email and immediately called me to sound the alarm. Your post made me laugh so hard (J is not for Jerk!!! HA) — you have such a skill with wit and acuity – I’ve told you before, and I’ll tell you again, I’m completely jealous (but in a good way)!
And I’m glad you decided to call out all those NUT-SUCKERS who keep googling nut-sucking and find your nut-sucking post instead of whatever it is they imagine they’ll find.
We’ve been writing together for about four months now, and I want you to know — I’m having so much fun! I am completely thrilled that you were up for making this crazy idea work. Most of all, of course, I am grateful for this partnership, which I feel has made our friendship even more interesting and satisfying than it already was.
🙂 Awwwwwww,
from your fave co-blogger,
L
Readers: Post love letters to your favorite single friends here!! (and no, I’m not implying that you should write to us, though you may, of course! ;))

Lisa and I write about some prosaic everyday happenings that make us appreciate the being single–such as our post Onely and Nut-Sucking. (Ok, so it’s my post. Lisa would not be caught dead sucking the salt off cashews and putting them back in the tin, even by herself.)
But what if we were Onely with Kids? We would probably not want our kids to misinterpret our nut-sucking and come away thinking that at a party, they can lick the salt off the pretzels and put them back in the Chex mix. (more…)
Pop Culture, Scourge of the Onelys part 7×777: Completely Unscientific Onely Poll for Lori Gottlieb and The Nation October 7, 2008

Christina alerted me recently to a debate between our (admittedly) favorite singles expert, Bella DePaulo, and writer Lori Gottlieb, who wrote a rather infuriating article entitled “Marry Him!” that was published in The Nation back in February/March 08. I’m not going to touch the conversation between DePaulo & Gottlieb (see below for links to the full exchange), but I do want to ask our valuable, intelligent, anti-singlist and happily single readers the question that Gottlieb seems to already have answered for us:
You say you’re happy being single…
So, are you lying or just in denial?

On our post about dating sites capitalizing on National Singles Week, we tagged chemistry.com. Probably in response to our tag, a chemistry.com solicitor whom I shall call “J” (short for his name, not for “Jerk”) offered to hook me and Lisa up with eligible men for seven free days! Wooeeee!
“Dear Onely,” he says, “I noticed that your blog discusses the challenges that single women go through in today’s hectic world of dating.” Oh, J, you’re so sensitive! Are you available? (more…)

As I have mentioned a time or two before, I am a graduate student and a college professor. Right now, I teach Introduction to College Writing. And in my class this semester, I have won the luck of the draw, so to speak, and drawn the most frustrating student I have ever had to teach. (more…)
Polyamorous Marriage and the Oneler October 2, 2008

In response to our post about Michael Turner’s The Trouble With Normal, Anita mentioned polyamorous relationships. This got us thinking–as proponents of people’s right not to get married, we also support people’s rights to be in non-heteronormative relationships such as same-sex. Does this mean we are also obligated, in theory, to support polyamorous relationships? (more…)

In response to an earlier post, Professor What If asked the above question and answered it with a definitive “no.” Unfortunately, I must agree. The United States may be (remarkably) ready for a black (mixed) president (we hope!!!), but it most certainly isn’t prepared for a single person to take the lead as commander-in-chief. As a case in point, let’s take Hillary Clinton: (more…)
Gay Unlike Me September 30, 2008

Yay! Another post where I get to reference Sex and the City!
Remember the episode where Miranda’s boss sets her up with a lesbian, having assumed that she must be gay because he’s never seen her with a man? That happened to me! Except it was my neighbor who tried to set me up with her lesbian friend. She said, “But I never saw any men around your house, so I thought. . .” Her friend was very beautiful, so too bad for me I’m not gay. (more…)
