Hi Copious Readership,

I’m going to try to keep posting this month, because I think Onely is just the most fun hobby, but as Lisa said in her previous post, we’re a little swamped. One reason I in particular am swamped is that it’s NATIONAL NOVEL WRITING MONTH, created by Chris Baty.  I really recommend this event for all you creative types out there. Why? (more…)

Hi everyone,

Just wanted to drop a quick line to warn ya’ll (yes that’s how we talk in Kentucky!) that posting on this site may slow down slightly in the next month or so, as both Christina and I (I especially!) have found ourselves swamped with “real life” work. The last month of any semester always proves insanely busy for me, so I don’t expect to post more than once a week until approximately December 12th (unless I magically find time to do so!). Just wanted to warn you.

C & I agreed, however, that this should allow us to do more perusing of your blogs and perhaps others, so we’ll be reading and commenting on your work in the meantime! And of course if you have thoughts/comments/ideas that you’d like for us to write about here, we’re always happy to oblige!

I was reminded of our post about couple zit-popping by this segment of Nick Bakay‘s amusing married-versus-single post:

SINGLE: No one will ever know you spent the weekend watching a “mannix” marathon.
MARRIED: Someone to pop those hard-to-reach back zits.

OK, before (some of) you gag — this post is not actually about the wonders of shoe shopping. No — instead, it’s about how going shoe shopping recently reminded me to remember and relish my Oneliness (how’s that for some alliteration?!). (more…)

I called around to some window companies, hoping to get an estimate on replacing the nine windows in my townhouse. During the initial phone conversations when I set up appointments, Prince William Home Improvement asked me, “When will you and your husband be available for an estimate?” Long Fence and Home asked me, “Do you have a husband?” And Homework Remodeling asked me, “Will your husband be there too?” (more…)

I haven’t read these, but they look great. I just ordered them today, as I continue my quest to personally fund several love handles on the heaving gut of the Amazon.com beast. Note that Lisa and I are interested in singlehood around the world–hence Lisa’s intriguing post about Iranian singles and the below mention of Patel’s book: (more…)

Once Onely, always Onely? October 21, 2008

Once Onely, always Onely? If Lisa or I start dating someone seriously to the point that they become our “significant other”, do we forfeit our Onely status? I say no. Even if I get married, I will still be Onely. It’s sort of like once you pay your dues, you get a lifetime membership. And that’s a good thing. Social Psychologist Bella DePaulo pithily validates my point

Americans now spend more years unmarried than married. But even if we spent only a sliver of our lives single, we should be able to use that sliver to pick any door or puncture any myth. . .

I have a friend who is currently working on her Ph.D. in International Relations at Cambridge (in the UK). She has conducted extensive interviews over the last six months with Iranian women who were married during the Iran-Iraq War (1980-88) and whose husbands were killed (they are called martyrs). She is one of only a few doing the kind of research that works to highlight individual voices, and my friend is most interested in highlighting the lived experiences of these women because scholarship tends to pretend they don’t exist (they focus on the martyrs instead) or merely glosses over these women and assumes that the way the Iranian government portrays/represents these women is accurate.

Yes, I know that Trisha Yearwood is married to Garth Brooks, so she’s not technically Onely. That’s why we are creating the Honorary Onely award. We figure we can make coupled people Honorary Onelies if they exhibit a profound understanding of the Onely ethic (or if they give us a large donation). If Yale can give George W. Bush an honorary degree even though he is, technically, an Idiot, then we can make Trisha an Honorary Onely. (more…)
