In response to an earlier post, Professor What If asked the above question and answered it with a definitive “no.” Unfortunately, I must agree. The United States may be (remarkably) ready for a black (mixed) president (we hope!!!), but it most certainly isn’t prepared for a single person to take the lead as commander-in-chief. As a case in point, let’s take Hillary Clinton: (more…)

Yay! Another post where I get to reference Sex and the City!

Remember the episode where Miranda’s boss sets her up with a lesbian, having assumed that she must be gay because he’s never seen her with a man? That happened to me! Except it was my neighbor who tried to set me up with her lesbian friend. She said, “But I never saw any men around your house, so I thought. . .” Her friend was very beautiful, so too bad for me I’m not gay. (more…)

Single women only earn 56 cents to every dollar a married man makes!

Newsweeks and Time‘s coverage of the Sarah Palin VP campaign contains singlist rhetoric disparaging both childfree single women and single moms!  (Even though single women form a key voting demographic that could sway the election.)

Bella DePaulo, a social psychologist specializing in singlism (and conveniently for us, also an expert on the social psychology of deceiving and detecting deceit) writes a restrained yet scathing post about these topics here on the Huffington Post.  Check it out! And then—GO VOTE! (more…)

On our in-process “Things We Like” page, Lindabeth recommended an interesting-sounding book by Michael Warner, The Trouble With Normal. I don’t know if we’ll end up reviewing this book, but it definitely raises a very interesting point! Ron Hogan’s below Amazon.com review says Warner argues that when people push for gay marriage, they are trying to normalize gays according to the current culturally sanctioned standards of monogamy and matrimony. But according to Warner, really this just paves the way for trying to normalize other people who don’t fit into heterosexual coupled roles. I’ve been virtually (haha) absent from Onely this week thanks to the remnants of Hurricane Ike that blew through the city of Louisville on Sunday and knocked out half the city’s power. Although I got my power back early Wednesday morning, having to work in candlelight required lots of patience and extra time, which therefore pushed me and my work behind, and thus put Onely low on the priority list (quite unfortunately).

But as I told Christina on Sunday evening as I sat on my loveseat surrounded by a small stockpile of burning candles, I much prefer to be Onely to being coupled in a situation like this. Here’s why: (more…)

Often it’s nice to come home to a smiling face, right? Sure. But our mission here at Onely is to seek, find, and relish those moments when significant others do not apply.

When I was living with my then-boyfriend, when I came home from work he greeted me and wanted me to sit down on the couch and take a couple minutes to chat about our days. Sweet, right?

Yes, but I hated it. (more…)

According to this New Scientist article by Priya Shetty, there may be a Monogamy Gene. This got me thinking, could there be a Onely Gene? Is the Monogamy Gene related to the Onely Gene? Copious Readership, what do you think?

First we need to understand the Monogamy Gene: (more…)

The terms “Cat Person” and “Dog Person” refer to someone who gravitates to a particular animal, not someone who likes one animal and dislikes another. Similar with Single Person and Coupled Person.  (more…)
