Regular reader/commenter Shannon wrote a really interesting post on her blog, A Beautiful Dream, about being a single parent recently — a perspective that Christina and I aren’t able to represent and so must give “props” to when we see posts like this. She describes the challenge of being single when her son gets sick and the further challenges/complications she anticipates when she will give birth to a second child, a daughter, in the next few months. Here’s a teaser for what she has to say: (more…)

Why are most pop songs about love? Because it’s a state fraught with emotion just begging to be released in song. Fine; I get that. But of all the pop songs about love, why are most of them about man-woman couple love? Because that’s the kind of love our world seems to place above all other kinds of love. Not fine; I don’t get that. (more…)

Copious Readership, how would YOU have responded to these rude questions?
“So when are YOU getting married?” I got this question from a woman I had met five minutes earlier, after she heard that our mutual friend was engaged. (more…)

To answer my own question, I’m Onely by chance AND by choice!
I don’t have a lot of CHANCES to meet men. For years, chronic health problems have forced me to spend a lot of time lying down. If I don’t get a four-hour nap on Saturday and a four-hour nap on Sunday, I will likely have trouble functioning during the subsequent workweek. I can’t drink alcohol. I can’t do cardio sports unless I have days of recovery time. I can only go out one night a weekend unless I want to risk consequences. That’s all chance. BUT: (more…)

Am I Onely because I choose to be by myself, or am I Onely because circumstances have forced singlehood on me? That is, am I getting what I want, or am I wanting what I’ve got? Would I change my single status? Could I? Copious Readership, what do you think? (more…)

Hello all our faithful readers (or… not so faithful, whatever – we don’t care, so long as you’re reading)!
Christina and I have been discussing how we want to shape the future of Onely. We have both been having a lot of fun writing, thinking, reading your comments, and etc. over the past two months. We’re looking forward to many more months, years, days, weeks (etc.) to come!
That being said, my semester is about to start (for those of you who haven’t read the “About Us” page, I’m in a Ph.D. program in Louisville Kentucky, and I teach AND take classes during the school year, so I’m about to get super-busy), and so we have agreed that, in order to make sure we’re both posting consistently and keeping you (our readers) happy, we have decided to commit to at least 4 (total) posts per week, and possibly more depending on how energetic we’re feeling. Also, new posts will probably appear on weekdays more often than weekends.
And while we’re at it, if you have specific ideas/request/suggestions for our site, feel free to comment here and/or send us an email — we will be happy to revise our site as needed to make you happy!!
So stay tuned – we’ve got a lot to say here at Onely, and we’re happy you’re reading! 🙂

So I just stumbled across an article which describes a 20-year-old who was arrested for having unpaid library fines! (poor girl, she doesn’t deserve to be punishedfor borrowing books!!!) What does this have to do with Being Onely, you might ask? Well, not much really. Except I have a problem. It’s called I-must-have-books. I mean, I must have them, and after a summer dedicated mostly to reading and thinking (only one month of teaching!), I currently have a ton of library books here in my apartment. They are piled in small, haphazard groups on my coffee table, hidden under loose papers all over my desk, stacked neatly on shelves in my living room — and of course let’s not forget the books I own, which take up lots of shelf space in the hallway outside of my apartment (seriously, the shelves are so big that there was no space for them — or the books I own — inside of this one-bedroom apartment!). Submitted by Dick on May 4, 2008 – 7:54pm.You seem to spend an inordinate amount of time worrying about the ‘stigma’ of being single. Could it be that you are repressing your desire to connect with someone? I can hardly believe that single people are so repressed. Just another ‘ism’ to distract people from real problems.
Onely and Overweight August 19, 2008

Although I am not overweight right now, I take some medicine that can make me overweight, given the right circumstances.
So I got to thinking about the similarities between singlism and weightism. They are the last “isms” that won’t get you shunned in a cocktail party. Racism and sexism are looked on with disgust. (more…)
